Historic moment!

Historic moment!

We are so happy and proud to be part of a historic devolution deal which has seen the transfer the freehold of the former Ships & Castles leisure centre building and the wider Pendennis Headland from Cornwall Council to Falmouth Town Council, UK for £1!

Pendennis Leisure have now signed the lease to enable us to continue our mission to reopen much needed sustainable swimming and leisure facilities at the site. Unfortunately the pool is no longer in any condition to reopen sustainably in the near future, but whilst we work on longer term plans to redevelop the pool to a sustainable facility that Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding area needs and deserves, we are looking to reopen the building as soon as possible as part of our “meanwhile” plan and to provide mixed Community and leisure space.

Mayor Kirstie Edwards, on behalf of Falmouth Town Council, said,

“Last year, following the closure of the Ships and Castles leisure centre and the uncertainty regarding the future of the wider Pendennis Headland, Falmouth Town Council were given a very clear mandate by the people of Falmouth to secure the beautiful Pendennis Headland and its heritage for the benefit of all, for ever. Today we are delighted to say that we have achieved this. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who has worked so hard on this deal on behalf of the community of Falmouth.”

Gemma Adams, Pendennis Leisure trustee said,

“We are thrilled to finally be able to say that the community has secured the headland for good. It is a historic moment, and we are massively grateful to the teams in Falmouth and Cornwall Councils who have made this possible. Even though the old swimming pool is no longer functional, we will be opening the doors again as soon as possible for a wide range of other community uses and are focused on getting Falmouth the leisure facility it needs and deserves for the long term.”

Thank you so much to everyone in the community who has supported us and helped us get this far – and especial thanks to all the volunteers who have given us so much time and energy over the last year working to make this real.

Thank you Falmouth Town Council, UK! To all the councillors, officers and team members who have bent over backwards to make this possible. Thankyou too to our MP Cherilyn Mackrory MP for her steady support and commitment.

We are grateful to Cornwall Council for enabling this to happen and for giving us the chance to show what the community can do.

This is the beginning of something really exciting for Falmouth and the surrounding areas and we are really looking forward to involving everyone in the journey.

Thank you! Meur ras!
