Is Ships & Castles re-opening?!

by | Feb 22, 2023 | News | 0 comments

Hi all,

In chatting with a few people this week we realise that some people are out of the loop about what’s happening up at Ships & Castles at the moment.

The plan is still that once the headland has been successfully devolved to Falmouth Town Council, UK, Pendennis Leisure will take on the lease of the Ships and Castles site including of the grass areas around the building and the car park (this should be early April).

‘The Meanwhile plan’ 👭🌲(no swimming pool- please see previous info)

We’ve been in discussions and met with fitness professionals and instructors , maintenance people, food and drink services, pop up cinema/theatre, people who work running children services such as playgroups , Cornwall College adult education service and more, about possible uses in the interim period.

So many possibilities both inside and outside and we are keen to explore them! We are really looking forward to getting stuck in to repairing and making the space fit to open as a Community Hub as soon as we can!

Unfortunately after a year of being closed , there is much in the way of repairs, maintenance, cleaning and decorating to do and we really will appreciate help over the next few weeks.

We are in communication with Falmouth town Council/Falmouth BID about how we can work in collaboration for events such as Armed Forces Day and Tall Ships – providing parking and venue support where we can.

We need to ensure we have enough revenue to facilitate the opening and running of the centre (Insurance, energy, staff and running costs all mount up quickly) but we also appreciate the value in footfall and breathing life back into the centre and getting people back using it as a wonderful community resource/space. This may also help us with future funding bids/grants.

‘The Pool Plan’ 🏊🏻💦

We are still moving forward with applying for planning permission, pool design and working to get inside any potential bids for levelling up 3/any future grant money to allow us to design and build a 25m pool and learner pool in the footprint of the existing building.

We are always seeking other funding opportunities for both the meanwhile and pool plan.

We have representatives from different user groups (such as local surf life-saving clubs and disability groups) to consult with and have nominated people to communicate/liaise with schools and someone helping us with our social media.

We hope that fills everyone in a little bit. The last year and a half has been a rollercoaster with ever moving goalposts, but we are still as enthusiastic and committed as day one.

We look forward to updating everyone a bit more on the next meeting on Tuesday March 21st at Falmouth Rugby Clubhouse.

Any ideas always welcome

Drop us a message 🙂
